Whales are doing their part to fight global warming—in a rather unusual way. When whales poop, they eject enormous plumes of fecal matter known by those unfortunate enough to get caught swimming in one as “poonamis.” This generous spray of poop is the perfect fertilizer for phytoplankton keeping it hardy and healthy so that it can capture carbon dioxide from the air and turn it into oxygen during photosynthesis.
